Pet Photos with Santa happening this weekend

Is your family dog or cat looking for a chance to let Santa know their Christmas wish list?  They’ll have that chance this weekend.

Pet Social Worker, News of Maricopa, and Ram Up Nutrition are presenting “Holiday Pet Photos with Santa” this Saturday, from Noon to 3:00 pm, at the Stage Stop Marketplace.

Santa Claus is coming to town!

For the eighth year in a row, the Christmas season is bringing two “famous guests” to Maricopa, and once again local firefighters are helping them out!

This Friday at 6:00 pm, the Maricopa Fire Department will pick up Santa and his wife in one of their fire trucks and escort them safely to the “Southwest Pole” in Desert Cedars to kick off the “12 Days of Christmas with Mr and Mrs Claus”.

County offers tips for preparing and cooking your holiday turkey

Pinal County Environmental Health Services is offering residents some tips when preparing their turkey over this holiday season.  These tips will help the cooks of the house serve a delicious, and safe turkey.

When preparing a turkey, be aware of the four main safety issues: thawing, preparing, stuffing, and cooking to adequate temperature.

ADOT: I-17 north of Phoenix is a busy ‘Safety Corridor’ over Thanksgiving weekend

Interstate 17 north of the Phoenix area, one of the state’s busiest highways during holiday weekends, will be the focus of a safe-driving campaign at the start and end of the extended Thanksgiving weekend, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

A coalition of agencies, including ADOT, the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and local fire departments, is teaming up in an effort to limit serious crashes and respond to incidents along the busy stretch of I-17 between Black Canyon City and Camp Verde.

Representative Paul Gosar, of Arizona's 4th Congressional District, will be hosting a Town Hall entitled, "Bring Your Thoughts to the Table", tonight in Maricopa.

The event will allow residents to speak with the Congressman on issues that are important to them.  Also to be discussed is the SR347/Union Pacific grade separation, the Lower Santa Cruz River Alliance and the Interstate 11 project.

The Town Hall will be held from 6:30 tp 8:30 pm at the Maricopa City Hall, located at 39700 West Civic Center Plaza. All members of the public are invited to attend.

Rain causes few problems locally - Still more to come

The Maricopa Fire Department and City of Maricopa officials are monitoring local conditions as a wet low pressure system moves through the state.

Despite overnight and early morning rain, local roads are still in good condition. Rancho El Dorado Parkway was closed at the Santa Rosa Wash early this morning, but has since re-opened. SR238 has water in many of the dips between Maricopa and Gila Bend, but remains open and passable. Val Vista Drive is currently closed at the Vekol Wash crossing, west of Warren Road.

Maricopa Fire Department issues weather advisory

The City of Maricopa is preparing for the upcoming heavy rains expected tonight through this weekend. The National Weather Service has predicted, “ a strong fall storm with moderate to heavy rainfall potential” that will affect the City. In response to the storm, the multiple departments within the City are gearing up to support any emergency needs resulting from the rains.

High winds, blowing dust limit visibility in parts of central Arizona

Strong winds are kicking up dust in parts of central Arizona and creating severely-limited visibility in the Casa Grande area, according to National Weather Service reports.

The Arizona Department of Transportation urges drivers to avoid driving into a dust storm. The National Weather Service has forecast gusts of up to 50 mph that could produce dust and near zero visibility.

High wind advisories are in place for many parts of Arizona until as late as 7:00 pm today. A blowing dust advisory is in place until 6:00 pm along the Interstate 10 corridor between Casa Grande and Picacho Peak.

Interim Maricopa Fire Chief made permanent

Maricopa's Interim Fire Chief since September, Brady Leffler, has been given the job permanently, Interim City Manager Trisha Sorensen announced yesterday.

“Brady Leffler has made an outstanding impact on the organization in a short amount of time,” said Sorensen. “In my opinion, he is just what the department needs at this time in its growth. The ideas he has presented for the future of the department will continue to improve the productivity and response times of the department, thereby providing additional benefit to the community as a whole.”

DNA evidence sends 19 year-old Maricopa man to prison for burglary, sexual assault

A 19 year-old Maricopa man has begun serving a ten and a half-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to kidnapping, attempted sexual assault and attempted burglary.

The case began on March 8th of this year when Shakir Thomas broke into a Maricopa residence, burglarized the home, detained and attempted to sexually assault one of the female occupants. The Maricopa Police Department responded and investigated the incident.

Thirteen suspects in custody over smuggling charges

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office has thirteen people in custody, in relation to drug and human smuggling activities in the desert south of Maricopa.

On Friday, November 8th, around 6:30 am, a PCSO deputy was on patrol traveling westbound on Interstate 8 when he observed a Nissan passenger car and a Kia sports utility vehicle also traveling westbound on the freeway. The deputy observed the Nissan was only occupied by the driver and the Kia was occupied by the driver and a female passenger. Both vehicles then exited the interstate at Freeman Road.

Silver Horizon open for tours this Saturday

The Maricopa Historical Society has announced that the historic California Zephyr Silver Horizon rail car will be open for public tours this Saturday, November 16th.

The Silver Horizon was part of the famous California Zephyr domes and streamliners that charmed the American people for more than 20 years. The dome car was built for the California Zephyr passenger line, which operated from 1949 until 1970.

Native New Yorker cleaning up after overnight fire

The Maricopa Fire Department was summoned to Maricopa's Native New Yorker restaurant this morning after a fire alarm indicated sprinkler system discharge.

Crews from the intial engine that was dispatched to the scene found moderate smoke within the structure and immediately called for additional assistance and upgraded the call to a working fire. As additional crews arrived on scene, firefighters worked quickly to locate the source of the fire in the kitchen cooking area.

Registration now open for annual Christmas decorating contest

Registration is now open for the City of Maricopa's annual Holiday Homes and Businesses on Parade decorating contest.

A panel of judges will select the grandest light displays and use of holiday decor in the following categories: Most Creative; Best Theme; Best Light Show; Best Use of Color; and Best on Parade.  Participants are encouraged to be original and creative with decorating the exterior of their home with seasonal characters, scenes, and props.

The contest is also extended to commercial businesses through the Special Event Permit: Supporting Holiday Shopping Program. Winners in the business category receive a fee waiver of banner permits for a period of 6 months (January through June of the following year).

Heritage District residents benefit from first Smoke Detector Walk

Volunteers from the newly formed City of Maricopa Community Emergency Response Team and Boys Scouts of America partnered with the Maricopa Fire Department and the Arizona Burn Foundation for the city’s first-ever Smoke Detector Walk.

The event took place from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday and included crews from the Maricopa Fire and Police Departments providing support as necessary.

Third annual golf tournament builds community, museum

The Maricopa Historical Society hosted its third annual golf tournament at The Duke at Rancho El Dorado on October 26th. The goal of the event was to raise money toward building a brick and mortar museum for the city of Maricopa.

The tournament raised $7,654.21, an increase of more than $2,500 over the 2012 event.
