Dates set for upcoming City events

Two great local events are happening next month:

Registration for the 9th Annual Fishing Derby will open on Wednesday, February 6th, at 7:00 am. This year's event will take place on Saturday, March 9th, from 2:30-4:00 pm at Pacana Park.

Specialized Smoke Alarm to Benefit Hearing-Impaired Resident

Nice story I received from the City of Maricopa:

On January 11, members of the Maricopa Fire Department made a visit to a Maricopa home and installed a specialized smoke alarm for the hearing-impaired resident.

Gila River to vote on freeway alignment

The Gila River Indian Community will hold a vote, February 7th, on whether to locate the final section of Loop 202, also known as the South Mountain Freeway, on reservation land.

Current plans call for the freeway, which would be a valuable alternative to I-10 for Maricopa drivers headed to the West Valley, to follow an alignment along Pecos Road west to 55th Avenue.  This alignment would result in the destruction of a church, plus more than one-hundred Ahwatukee homes.  Several scenic ridges in Phoenix South Mountain Park would also have to be blasted.

If the tribe approves, the Arizona Department of Transportation would be able to relocate the freeway south of the current proposed alignment, where it would be placed on flat, undeveloped land.

Catholic Parish Festival re-scheduled for this weekend

One week later than originally planned, thanks to the rain, Our Lady of Grace will hold its annual Parish Festival.
