Finalists announced for next City Manager
After conducting a nationwide search and recruitment effort, the Maricopa City Council has picked three finalists to fill the City Manager position left vacant after Brenda Fischer left for Glendale last year.
The finalists are: Gregory Rose, current Interim City Manager Trisha Sorensen, and Sandra WIlson.
Gregory Rose is the Principal Agent of Rose and Associates. Gregory provides consulting services to local governments, not-for-profits, and private companies in the areas of performance management, strategic planning, organizational design, budgeting and forecasting.
Prior to starting his consulting business, Gregory worked for local governments, private businesses, and was a member of United States Air Force. His work experience includes City Manager for the City of North Las Vegas, Nevada; City Administrator for Hyattsville, Maryland; Deputy City Manager for University City, Missouri; and Operations Manager for Electronic Data Systems (EDS).
Gregory is a credentialed member of the International City/County Managers Association and a member of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators.
Gregory earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration degree and a Masters of Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Dallas. He was honored as the public administrator of the year by the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Forum for Black Public Administrators. Gregory has been recognized by the International City/County Managers Association for his years of service in the profession and his mentorship of young professionals.
Maricopa Interim City Manager Trisha Sorensen oversees the nine departments that comprise the City of Maricopa organization. Ms. Sorensen possesses broad experience in public administration including budgeting, community development, strategic planning, organizational development, intergovernmental relations, community relations, labor relations, capital project management, communications and employee relations.
Ms. Sorensen holds a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree from Arizona State University. Prior to serving as the City of Maricopa's Interim City Manager, Ms. Sorensen served as Interim Community Services Director for Coconino County during the summer and fall of 2012 and she worked for the City of Mesa, Arizona for 13 years. Before working for the City of Mesa, Ms. Sorensen worked for several Arizona State agencies including the Governor's Office, the Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Corrections.
Ms. Sorensen was born in Phoenix, Arizona and has served the Arizona public sector for more than 30 years. She has 4 children and 4 grandchildren.
Sandi Wilson joined Maricopa County as the Budget Manager in February 1993. She has held positions of Budget Director, Chief Resource Officer and her current position of Deputy County Manager, a position she has held since 1998. Ms. Wilson was instrumental in identifying and solving the fiscal crisis which emerged during her initial years with the County. Other substantial accomplishments include the implementation of Managing for Results, the transition of Maricopa Integrated Health System to the Special Health Care District, project manager for the Government Performance Project, and obtaining fiscal stability and integrity. She also served as the Acting County Manager from December 2008 – March 2009.
As the Deputy County Manager, Ms. Wilson has been responsible for a variety of departments over her career including: Human Resources, Risk Management, and Information Technology. The departments that she currently oversees include the Office of Management and Budget, Public Defense Services, Public Fiduciary, Public Health, Correctional Health, Medical Examiner's Office, Policy and Compliance, Research and Reporting. Over her tenure she has also served as the Human Resource Director and Public Health Director. Sandi was responsible for the transition of the payroll system to a private vendor in June of 2011, thereby saving the county millions of dollars over the life of the contract. She has also provided fiscal leadership during the last recessionary period, ensuring structural balance for the $2.3 billion county budget and continuing the cash capital philosophy by building a $341 million Court Tower without bonding and through cash savings.
Prior to her employment at Maricopa County, Sandi worked for a major corporation for 15 years and left as a Financial Services Director. She has a Master's of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, and a Bachelor of Science in General Business Administration from Arizona State University. Ms. Wilson also holds a certification in Human Resource Management. She is a native Phoenician. She is married and has three children, ages 13, 16, and 21.
The three finalists will be at Maricopa City Hall on Tuesday, January 7th, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, to meet with the public. The City Council will consider public feedback in the final selection process.
