Strong winds, blowing dust could affect travel across Arizona today

Strong winds predicted for today could lead to difficult driving conditions along with periods of blowing dust and low visibility on highways across much of the state, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a blowing dust advisory until 6:00 pm for parts of central Arizona, including from Phoenix to Casa Grande. Areas of blowing dust and limited visibility have already been reported along Interstate 10 near Queen Creek Road.

Council selects Rose for City Manager

Following a nationwide executive search and recruitment effort, the Maricopa City Council has selected Gregory Rose to become the next City Manager. Rose will start on February 3rd and be officially sworn in at the February 4th City Council meeting. He will lead a team of 219 employees and administer an annual budget of $187 million.

Awards to be presented to those who helped rescue girl from septic tank

This past Saturday, just before Noon, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office began to receive several 9-1-1 calls related to a 2-year-old child who had fallen into sewage/septic tank behind the Farmer’s Market located at 49301 West Papago Road, in Maricopa.

Deputies and medical personnel were immediately sent to the call.

Deadline nearing to apply for new Open Space and Trails Advisory Commission

In December 2013, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors approved a new Open Space and Trails Advisory Commission.

The commission will consist of ten members from the public, each of the five Supervisors will have two selections to the body. The members must be either a resident of Pinal County or be a business or property owner within the county.

Finalists announced for next City Manager

After conducting a nationwide search and recruitment effort, the Maricopa City Council has picked three finalists to fill the City Manager position left vacant after Brenda Fischer left for Glendale last year.

The finalists are: Gregory Rose, current Interim City Manager Trisha Sorensen, and Sandra WIlson.

Local Dairy Queen hit by morning fire

The Maricopa Fire Department was dispatched to the Shell gas station at John Wayne Parkway and Garvey Avenue, this morning, after a fire was reported inside the building.

Upon arrival, fire crews found a small kitchen fire inside the Dairy Queen located in the same building.  The fire was quickly extinguished and firefighters then worked to clean up the kitchen and remove smoke from the structure.

Cub scouts to do annual tree pickup

Maricopa’s Cub Scout Pack 997 will be holding their annual Christmas Tree Pickup on Saturday, January 11th, 2014.

Pickups can be arranged anytime between now and January 5th for the January 11th pickup. (Set it and forget it…) Have your tree at the curb by 9:00 am and the scouts will do the rest!

Four injured in alcohol-related accident in Hidden Valley

Four Ak-Chin tribal members were injuried in a single-vehicle rollover crash, yesterday in Hidden Valley.

On Wednesday evening, around 6:30 pm. the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident scene in the area of Hidden Valley and Fulcar Roads.  When deputies arrived, they determined the driver of the 1999 Ford Expedition had been traveling northbound on Hidden Valley and lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll several times.
